As one of the major UK tourist destinations outside of London, East Anglia is full of fantastic places to visit. Heritage steeps the region from collegiate Cambridge, to Ely's grand Norman cathedral, to Bury St Edmunds' Georgian streets to the unassuming market towns which may not have any particular monuments but which are minor architecture marvels anyway. Saffron Walden is a good example of this with its picturesque streets.
Cambridge is well known for its ancient colleges and quirky museums. No visit to the city is complete without a punt tour along the college backs on the River Cam. Huntingdon was once the home of British republican ruler Oliver Cromwell and the links persist to the modern day not least with the Cromwell Museum. Both Ely and bury St Edmunds have their cathedrals, Newmarket its racecourse whilst market towns such as Royston and Saffron Walden are simply places to visit for their own simple charms.
Away from the towns there are plenty of country houses and parks. Stately home Wimpole Hall, south of Cambridge draws the crowds both for its architecture and extensive grounds as does Audley End House near Saffron Walden. There are many smaller properties of interest scattered across the area too which are well worth a visit.
Here find everything from Cambridge attractions and museums in Cambridge to parks in Huntingdon or days out and weekends away in Ely, Newmarket, Haverhill, Saffron Walden, Royston, St Neots, St Ives and Huntingdon. There are places to see like Ely Cathedral Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, the Cambridge colleges, punting on the River Cam along with Cambridgeshire animal refuges, zoos, stately homes, small museums, parks and family fun along with reviews, maps and many special offers.
