"The most fetching little theatre in the country"
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
Built in 1819 the beautiful Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds is one of the oldest theatres in Britain. A National Trust property, it is the last working Regency playhouse and to this day still runs a full programme of drama, music, comedy, dance, children's work and light entertainment.
The playhouse has its own theatre company which produces high quality contemporary drama, period productions, touring work and a very special Christmas pantomime.
It is one of the few locations in the world where works from the 18th and early 19th centuries are still professionally performed, and produces one large scale period production every September and rehearsed readings of lost works from the Georgian era three times a season.
The building is open to the public to visit as a historic location throughout the year, and the company runs entertaining guided tours on its dramatic history as well as heritage events to discover more about Georgian and Regency theatre.
Its Greene Room restaurant serves seasonal meals, cakes and snacks at events and before performances, home-cooked by the Theatre's chef Mo Johanson.
The organisation also runs a highly successful creative learning programme, with drama classes and workshops for children and adults.
Whether for live entertainment or a heritage visit the Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds looks forward to welcoming you soon.
