What we thought

We dashed into the Kiln Café in Bury St Edmunds to get away from a particularly nasty hail storm, only to realise one of us would have to dash straight back out again. They don't accept credit or debit cards!

Found in Elsey's Yard just off Risbygate Street, the Kiln Café is part of the Malthouse Project. Back in 2006 the derelict 300 year old malthouse was converted into a multi-purpose

Offering all the usual café staples all the food is made on the premises with the exception of the bread. Although we got the impression the chef would be happy to bake too if there were enough hours in the day!

public space. As well as the café there's a heritage and training centre, meeting and conference facilities for hire, accommodation for local people and offices for the St Matthew Housing group.

Taking it's name from when the room housed the building's kiln the café may be quite small but it's light and airy due to the white walls, glass front, and clever lighting. There are only six tables inside but when it's warm enough more soon appear outside. Hanging on the walls are paintings by a local artist who was helped by the project.

Shaking the icicles from our shoulders we met a bustling stream of regulars although a few were first timers like us. Offering all the usual café staples - sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes, cakes, pastries - all the food is made on the premises with the exception of the bread. Although we got the impression the chef would be happy to bake too if there were enough hours in the day! Naturally all the hot drinks are organic and fair trade, and slightly more unusually there's gluten free bread available on request too.

In line with the healthy vibe sandwiches and paninis come with a choice of a salad or a fruit garnish, and tortilla chips. So, unsurprisingly, our jacket potatoes came with a generous side salad and the added delight of home-made coleslaw. Meanwhile our brie, cranberry and bacon panini had a perfectly balanced combination of sweet and savoury flavours. Naturally we let ourselves down at the first chance we had by ordering the irresistible home-made muffins...

Service was friendly and efficient even when it was busy. The chef even managed to find time to come and check that all customers were happy which was nice. We thoroughly recommend a visit and when you do stop by don't forget to pick up a leaflet on forthcoming special events. From children's music workshop to spiritualist evenings to a Georgian festival there's normally something fun happening.

We have visited the Kiln Cafe on several occasions and are always made to feel very very welcome. The food is served promptly and has always been of a very high standard and very good value for money. The ambience makes us to return - cleanliness excellent. Truly a hidden gem, long may it continue to serve the community. I cannot speak highly enough about the place !!
