"A truly impressive Wine Store" - The Guardian

The Wine Store are independent Wine Importers and Wine Merchants.

Trading since in 1984, Mary and Barry Sapsford specialise in wines made by an individual or family business. It all began by chance: "We booked a French holiday, staying on a Muscadet producer's property," explained Mary. "When we arrived, the grapes were being harvested and all of a sudden the rain came down. It was obvious that the grapes would be spoiled if not picked quickly. We turned out to help, and the winemaker, thankful for our help and pleased with our interest, took us through the whole winemaking process."

In 2006, the couple took over The Wine Store at La Hogue in Chippenham.

"We started with The Loire Valley and then we expanded to Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, Cotes du Rhone, Languedoc and Roussillon. There is a good selection of Spanish, Italian and German wines plus many Ports and Sherry. Our New World wines have the same background of individuality, and offer a range of wines from Australia, Chile, Argentina, North America and South Africa.

"Our very special selection is focused on wines that we import from small and family vignerons. It is our intention to try and avoid brand names when possible. There are so many good wines being made by people who care about their land and their wines. We love to find the new and bring it to our customers. Many of these wines are not expensive but they are made by individuals determined to do the best they can."

The store has frequent wine tastings to showcase new and exciting varieties, and they ship many wines themselves. The couple visit the vineyards and we know the vignerons, and also offer a food and wine matching service.
