Valentines Candlelight Concert
By Commercial feature
Publication date: 26/01/2010
Local pianist returns to Ely Cathedral
Ely Cathedral will celebrate Valentine's Day (on Sunday 14th February) in style with a spectacular concert by locally bred concert pianist, Warren Mailley-Smith.
A Valentine's Champagne Concert by Candlelight will see the pianist, recently described by Classic FM as "Stunning... Fantastic... Sensational... Gorgeous" and "a Huge UK talent..." performing a programme of romantic favourites, including Gershwin's brilliant Rhapsody in Blue. A complimentary glass of champagne is also included to round off the perfect evening!
Born and schooled in the local village of Earith, Warren received his first piano lessons at the age of five with Queens College Cambridge Organ Scholar, Stephen Armstrong. Warren's forthcoming Valentine's Day performance at Ely will be his first performance in the Fens since leaving the area over two decades ago.
"I have a very fond association with Ely and the whole surrounding area, as it was where my original fascination with the black and white keys was nurtured and developed, so it is exciting indeed to be returning so close to my old home village to perform for the first time in this beautiful cathedral!"
Since graduating from the Royal College of Music, Warren has won numerous awards and prizes, appearing at West Road, Cambridge's premiere concert venue, on a number of occasions. He has also made his debuts in London at the Southbank, the Wigmore Hall and on the international stage, most recently at Carnegie Hall.
Concert pianists traditionally require hours and hours of daily practise in order to perfect the many hundreds of thousands of notes contained in every performance, although Warren insists that there is never a dull moment.
"One of the things I love most about what I do is certainly the huge variety of situations I find myself in on a weekly basis. One night I might be in a concert hall in front of 500 people. The next day in a little village church with 40 people, followed by a day with a series of school workshops, a day at home to practise solidly and then off to the Seychelles for three days to perform on a cruise ship!"
A regular favourite with the Royal Family, Warren has given over 30 private performances at Buckingham Palace, Sandringham and Highgrove, whilst also sharing platforms with the likes of Robbie Williams and Will Young. Today, he performs all over the world at music festivals and societies, appearing as special guest artist on some of the world's most exclusive cruise ships.
Warren recently launched his own ringtone production company with the aim of introducing the enormous repertoire of classical piano music to the masses on mobile phones in the UK and worldwide.
"My philosophy is very much about following one's dreams and ambitions, which for me is definitely taking live classical music to the widest possible audience and attracting new audiences. Of course, classical music can be relaxing, atmospheric and moving when you hear it on the radio or a CD. But when you witness music being created before your eyes and ears, the experience can be uplifting and engaging in a very different way. I am hoping that my Valentines concert at Ely might just tempt some first-timers out to experience a piano concert, as well as offering seasoned concert-goers a programme with something to enjoy!".

Dinner for Schmucks
Invite your inner idiot to dinner this week with 'Dinner for Schmucks'.
