It's been a constant source of amazement to us that no-one has opened a good Mexican restaurant in Cambridge: one of those places where your chances of eating the whole meal are small but you don't care because it's cheap and they give you a doggy bag for leftovers. We're still waiting, but in the meantime Nanna Mexico on Regent Street is well worth a visit.

fast food formula with a choice of fillings (chicken, minced beef, steak, vegetarian) in a choice of wrappers. For messy eaters we recommend the burrito, where your food comes safely wrapped in a soft tortilla parcel. If you're braver you might try the tacos which have a habit of squirting when you bite on them, or the quesadillas where the gooey cheese demands a lack of eating inhibition.
Nanna Mexico scores high on value for money - portions are a decent size and it's difficult to spend more than a fiver on a main. Don't skimp though. If you go for the basic rice and minced meat fillings you'll find it rather bland, but pay an extra quid for lashings of fresh guacamole and sour cream and you'll be well rewarded. If you're feeling really flush, have some cheese nachos with jalapeno peppers for starters and an orange juice on the side - you'll still be well under a tenner.
Bear in mind though that Nanna Mexico is barely more than a takeaway. Actually eating in there is a pleasant enough experience, perched on one of the half a dozen bar stools at a counter overlooking Regent Street. But candelabra and rose vases it definitely isn't, and if you want alcohol or the loo you'll need to go elsewhere. And don't be late, it shuts at 9pm.
If you've ever eaten Mexican food from the take-away van that can sometimes be seen around Cowley Road and St Edmunds College, you know what to expect - it's the same family business. Nanna Mexico is a friendly place with good food at a cheap price, and we certainly recommend it. Maybe if enough of us eat there, they could afford to open a proper restaurant?
