Stepping inside the Canton Chinese Restaurant in Bury St Edmunds reveals a warm and welcoming dining space on two floors. Led by the predominantly dominantly red colour scheme Chinese prints line the walls and traditional lanterns hang from the ceiling. Tables are laid with linen napkins, forks and spoons - rather than chopsticks (available on request) - pointing out the venue?s friendly approach to guests less familiar with Chinese cuisine.

A family owned business based on Hatter Street for around 25 years the restaurant has a well established reputation amongst the locals. Generally everything is very comfortably priced with extra value offered on the set banquets. Do watch out for that 10% service charge for dining in - although this is clearly marked on the menu. The extensive menu covers the expected bases, divided into sections according to the main ingredient, with several seafood and vegetarian options available. Desserts make an appearance with choices such as fruit salad, gateaux, lychees and various fritters. There are also a few wines to look for on the menu from speciality Chinese wines through some more conventional choices such as Chablis and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
On our visit our selection of appetisers arrived very promptly. All were obviously freshly cooked and very tasty indeed. Mains were equally speedy, ranging from tofu to beef with a mixed vegetable chow mein, and one of the rice variations. All our dishes looked good, smelled enticing, and tasted close to heavenly. They were also all fresh and light free of the grease that sometimes accompanies Chinese meals elsewhere.
Service at the Canton deserves mention for bring professional and friendly, particularly as the staff helped us regarding allergy issues and personal taste preferences. The restaurant looks well cared for and given the attitude of the staff we can see why.
Good food and service makes the Canton a successful choice for a night out without breaking the bank. Watch out at weekends as the Canton can get rather busy, but popularity speaks for itself.
