What we thought

Many restaurants concentrate so hard on serving great food that they forget this is just one part of the dining experience.

People go to restaurants not just to eat, but to spend time together relaxing and talking. Spice lounge is special in that as well as serving good food it also pays a great deal of attention to this other aspect of dining. Even the layout of this restaurant seems

to have this in mind. There's a bar and a comfortable lounge area where customers can sit and relax with a drink before the meal. The large dining area, with its elegant wooden chairs and neatly laid tables, has plenty of room for big groups to gather.

Taking our seats we are given a very extensive menu offering such a wide-range of dishes that it's likely anybody could find something to their tastes. There are most of the standard curries, but also some interesting sounding specialities like trout bazah (deep fried trout) and squid cooked in ginger sauce. All of the dishes have nice descriptions accompanying them to help you understand exactly what they are about.

For those who are less of a fan of Indian food, there's also the nice addition of a few other dishes like steak and chips and chicken Kiev, while a spicy Bolognese also sounded very intriguing.

We went for the one signature dishes called Rangeela Kana, which is a specialty from the Goan region of South India. It came steaming hot with a wonderfully spicy aroma wafting from it and making our mouths water.

The soft pieces of meat came in a really wonderfully spiced sauce. The use of naga chilli gave an impressively forceful spice which is softened by the use of fresh spinach that adds a cool taste. In a lot of restaurants spicy curries are quite one dimensional, but here the sauces was given a bit more complexity with hints of distinctive fenugreek and garlic coming through.

We also had another specialty, the Parsi Butter Bean Bahar. Spice Lounge prides itself on this and understandably so. The beans were made into a very smooth creamy textured sauce that had a very rich and slightly earthy flavour. This was given an additional zing by the presences of a nicely potent spice that built in the mouth as you ate it.

With quite a few of the dishes on the menu similarly spicy, it was refreshing to find that Spice Lounge's wine and drinks had taken this into consideration. The large selection of well-priced wines was almost all of styles that would make a nice accompaniment to the rich, spicy flavours of curried dishes. There is also a list of beers available and with the kick of some of these dishes you might find yourself needing one.

The service throughout our meal was excellent and the restaurant has clearly made this a priority. But perhaps priority is the wrong word, because rather than prioritise it does seem like the owners have achieved the rare feat of getting everything up to a really high standard. You sense that the owner Luthfur Rahman has put a lot of work and personal pride into the operation.

Together with his brother, he personally renovated Spice Lounge to give it the current warm atmosphere and classy decor. He has likely applied the same hands on approach to other aspects of the business, and this hard work really feels like it has paid off. The attention means that Spice Lounge is not just a good place to eat, but also an attractive place to meet as well.
