Loch Fyne Restaurant (Cambridge)

BOOK ONLINE IN MAY TO WIN A FREE MEAL! (DETAILS)

Although it was a traditionally quiet evening night for restaurants the newly refurbished Loch Fyne was busy and we were glad we booked. A refurbishment in January 2007 created a bigger bar/waiting area near the door, making it easier to pop for a quick oyster fix.

Loch Fyne provides a couple of meat and vegetarian options, but as it is a seafood restaurant chain that is clearly the main focus. The menu is updated quarterly to ensure the best seasonal fish are on offer, and describes commitment to marine conservation, the tuna was listed as long-line caught tuna for instance.

First we tried oysters on the half shell covered with garlic breadcrumbs. These were delicious. As main courses we ordered the home-made Fish Stew with olives and chorizo, pan fried fillets Bream served with mash and pesto and a Tuna Steak with oriental noodles, with the added request it was done very rare. We cut into the tuna steak to find it was done in exactly the manner that had been requested. The bream had a lovely fresh sensation from the fish and its very light watercress pesto. The fish stew was very spicy though, four spoonfuls and the lips were left burning. The waitress seemed aghast that some of the fish stew was remaining and asked if there had been a problem with it. When we told her she rushed off into the kitchen and came back saying it was probably the paprika from the chorizo (more kick to it than the supermarket stuff we'd usually have) and promptly offered a complimentary dessert. The banoffee pie and rich chocolate mousse were fine palate cleansers. This was an example of the excellent service. The cost was also pleasing, very reasonable for a three course meal at a quality seafood restaurant .

Leaving Loch Fyne we stepped out onto the pavement to be greeted by the impressive sight of the classical pillars of the Fitzwilliam Museum lit up splendidly in the dark. This impressive sight felt like an appropriate coda to an impressive dining experience.

We had a very enjoyable meal. The mussels were superb.

Our first and last visit to this restaurant. The service was adequate but a bit slow between the main and dessert. The food was dissapointing - well presented but ordinary tasting. We enjoyed the home-made lemonade the most. Bread was served first and the chips were nice and so was the sea bass with fennel. The side salad was tasty but came at a price. The oysters were expensive and bland, the venison salad dry, the scallops large but tasteless, the grilled salmon too salty and the desserts stock standard. The atmosphere is nice - quiet on one side and bustling on the other - but the value is poor. Think of good pub meals served at good restaurant prices. [VENUE RESPONSE] I am sorry to hear that you found your over all experience to be on the average side; that is certainly not we are aiming for. In terms of quality of some of the ingredients such as the scallops we will certainly look into this with our supplier Loch Fyne Oysters. The salmon dish you describe is on the salty side as it is smoked and roasted, however you should have been informed of this when ordering in order to help you choose a dish to your taste. I have also passed on your comments regarding the choice of desserts on offer to my head chef in order for him to address the issue.
