Upon entering The Green Man in Six Mile Bottom stuffed animals fill the eye. Placed throughout most of the building the immediate feel is one of having stumbled across a rather successful hunt. Luckily, even for a non-hunter, this is not too intimidating. The leather chairs, sturdy tables and a decent sized real fire all beckon you to take the weight off and relax with a pint (as long as

you aren't squeamish about sharing your drinking time with an owl, rabbit or head of a stag looking on).
A large black safe adds to the diverse décor sitting imposingly at the front of the more formal dining area. Although this is not a place so reserved that you can't turn to the customer on the table behind you and ask whether they recommend the dessert they are eating. Naturally friendly staff seem eager to make sure your visit is a pleasant one and when your stomach can resist the aromas coming from the kitchen no more, an obvious speciality from the menu would be the steaks.
Nearly every time the kitchen door swung open a sizzling cast iron plate with a slab of meat, cooked to the customer's liking (and ranging anywhere between 8oz and 32 oz) was brought to a different table. If red meat is not to your taste there is a choice of prawns, tuna or a veggie option equally sizzling and equally tempting as well as some staple basics of fish & chips and steak & ale pie.
While some of the desserts do not taste as if they were made on site the chef is obviously proud of the food he does cook as he will (if service allows) several times a night come out to check everyone is happy with their main meal and you just know the kitchen has a good hygiene standard as he also appears with his own dinner freshly prepared on the premises.
Somewhat counter-intuitively to the stuffed animals the back corner of the pub has a section devoted to Vinnie Jones. Pictures, posters and even a clapper board from his various films are placed all over the walls. Apparently Richard, the owner is a friend and big time Vinnie fan. A large TV is also here where you can finish off your evening after the meal (though be prepared for the chef to change the channel if he's about!).
Though it's a few miles out of Cambridge itself down winding country roads, for somewhere cosy and genuinely hospitable, The Green Man with its booked out Sunday carvery is undeniably worth giving a shot - no pun intended!
