'The Panton Arms is a lovely little backstreet pub. On a summer's day, who could not be enchanted by this white gingerbread building festooned with hanging baskets of petunias and nestled among rows of Victorian terraced houses.

black wrought iron gates that once bore the brewery's name, now bear the name of the current owners, Greene King. Inside two rooms have a traditional feel. One has a bar and pool tables. The other, more tables and chairs and on the walls paintings depicting comically a menagerie of slightly inebriated 19th century gentlemen. Outside, trees shade the cobbled courtyard, which on a warm day fills with pub goers.

On tap as real ales were IPA, Abbott Ale and Ruddles -- all served flawlessly. The food it has to be said was also marvellous. With a large selection of baguettes and sandwiches amongst the usual pub style food we were spoiled for choice The tuna melt baguette that we did eventually choose was juicy and succulent and came in a generous sized portion that almost took two of to finish. The Panton Arms, in short, is an all-round good pub.
