Crown, The (Little Walden)

'The Crown, a row of three cottages that became a tavern in 1748, boasts a distinguished golden crown hanging from an iron sign bracket. Painted white with pillar-box red doors and striking black shutters, the pub is no less striking inside, with vivid coloured walls and oak beams. Hunting scenes and an original Gerald Coulson painting dedicated to the pub adorn the walls along with some old photographs commemorating the wartime RAF base nearby. The layout of the pub is amazing; you can walk through an old

fireplace to reach a small room with a dartboard, while old settles and pine tables effectively to maximise space.

Friendly staff serve the selection of four real ales drawn directly from the barrels set in the rear wall of the bar. City of Cambridge, Adnams, Greene King IPA, and Spitfire are typically on offer. We visited on a hot summer's day, finding a seat on the small, pleasant patio and food beautifully and colourfully presented. Our chicken sandwich had lashings of moist meat and a side salad (£2.75). The bacon baguette topped with toasted cheese was huge. The food is very temping: A constantly changing specials board boasts meals such as German bratwurst (£7.50), fish and chips (£6.95), or starters such as smoked salmon and dill (£4.95). The chicken Italienne with basil and tomato sauce topped with melted cheeses looked great too. All the food is freshly cooked, making a visit to The Crown hjighly recommended.
