| The Hopbine is the definition of the generic pub, not an olde worlde oak-beamed traditional inn and not a modern light-wood bar, but just a pub. It is spacious, set in large L-shape around the bar, has pool table and quiz machines and attracts a mixed-bag of passers-by with its close proximity to Midsummer Common and the Grafton Centre.
The curry was a treat with creamy squash in a sweet chilli sauce served with crunchy wild brown rice On a closer look the décor includes attractive features such as art nouveau tiles around the fireplace, lush green plants and stained glass panels above the bar. And the food is more special than usual pub grub.
The simple menu drawn up on chalk boards features pub-food staples shepherd's pie, lasagne as well as jacket potatotes and baguettes - all are reasonably priced. But the specials board includes more exciting fare like Irish stew, king prawn and salmon pasta and stuffed mushrooms. We opted for a Thai squash and pineapple curry. The food arrives on large contemporary-design white plates that suggest an indulgence and the generous portions were just that. The pub is popular for Sunday lunches, and on the evidence of the dish we just tried, may be worth a try. The Hopbine has a Thai chef and serves Thai food on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. |
