A change of name hasn't hampered The Vaults in Cambridge one jot. Tucked away underground on Trinity Street the bar-restaurant is ideally positioned to be a favourite hang out, and it does seem to be popular with students, couples and work parties alike. Originally named The Vaults, the venue became The Depot for a while before deciding to resume being The Vaults due to popular demand back in the autumn

A labyrinth of nooks and crannies make this a unique place to dine, with one section mainly being dedicated to the bar area, a small spot for live music and a subdivision just for diners. Admittedly there isn't much natural lighting, other than a door at the top of the staircase, but it manages somehow not to be too dingy. The restaurant glows delicately with candles for that romantic feel and the 'lovers nook' - a secluded table towards the rear - is an interesting addition.
If you fancy a glass of champagne it is deliciously sparkling and somewhat of a steal price wise when compared with certain chain bars. For those feeling flush the cocktails are a speciality and mixed with flair. Although our favourite, the Bellini isn't on the cocktail list, many of the usual suspects are all present and correct and you could always sweet talk the bar staff into concocting something special.
A locally sourced main menu is currently available including dishes such as crayfish & samphire linguine or Huntingdon fidget pie (a pie traditionally served to farmers). But the tapas style menu is what The Vaults has a reputation for. Six dishes are adequate for two people which is great if you are not sure what you are in the mood for or fancy the look of what is on your companion's plates!
Highlights include the tasty and succulent char-grilled tuna, sticky rice and homemade meatballs. If these are not to your liking you are sure to find something that is as there are at least 25 different dishes available. Desserts are also worth leaving room for.
Though the service was a little slow on our visit (as the restaurant was packed, this was not too surprising) when the food did turn up it was worth a small wait. Plus the waiter's attitude and friendliness put paid to any complaints one may have had.
The atmosphere on our Friday night visit was buzzing and the clientele were just as open and friendly as the staff. Having been open for business for over 20 years with an emphasis on good food, drinks and fun, it would seem that The Vaults will be successful for a long time to come, whatever the name.
