The low roofs and old brown brick create a warm and cosy atmosphere at the Axe and Compass, and the friendly greeting we received reiterated this. The warm welcome made up for the windy roads we had had to drive through to get to the pub.
Built in the 1500s and once one of several pubs once in the village, the Axe and Compass, originally served the working men

from the fields with simply a barrel on the bar. Nowadays only one pub remains. Once the Foresters, then the Carpenter's Arms, the current name came comes from a tool used by each of those trades.
The whole village is steeped in history with thatched roofs. Black and white photographs in the pub portray the history of both the village and the pub and are wonderfully atmospheric.
After deliberation we opted for slow-roasted knuckle of lamb and home-made beef chilli. Although not the most extensive menu, it did offer variety including many traditional dishes such as giant Yorkshire pudding and gammon steak. The service was outstanding, the most patient waitress gave us advice, while still managing to be more cheerful than smiley Carol Smiley.
The temping starters on offer included sticky chilli beef and stuffed jalapenos. We chose crispy king prawns in batter with sweet chilli sauce, which was delicious and well presented. Portions of all the food was generous and prices very reasonable. A children's menu was on offer as well as other more snack type meals for those who would rather sit in the bar and sample the real ale.
The waitress advised us well, the mouth watering lamb literally fell of the bone and the accompanying sauce made even the slightly dry mashed potato taste perfect. The chilli was also good, and came with chips and tortilla crisps (as opposed to the alternative options of tortilla wraps, cheese and salad or rice).
The Axe and Compass is an authentic traditional pub, with excellent service and good quality food at very reasonable prices - a very enjoyable experience.
