Located in a basement on the well-heeled Rose Crescent, alongside designer shops for the more discerning, La Raza is a hidden lunchtime gem. We knew it as a fine live music venue and club/bar location, which has been a fixture of Cambridge nightlife since 2003, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover that food is on offer as well.

a flight of stairs, or seating in the outdoor terrace. We positioned ourselves in the corner of the room, which gave a view of the whole area, which is low down and lit romantically. We did suffer slightly from eyes-bigger-than-belly syndrome! The menu may appear to offer snacks, but the reality is that they are perfectly substantial! The menu has a Mediterranean feel and tapas features largely, with a range of hot, cold, meat and vegetarian options. Even paella is available.

We were very much taken by the special of "goat's cheese salad", which neatly sums up what is special about dining here. "Goat's cheese salad" would suggest nothing spectacular, but what arrived was a large plate of goat's cheese in a parcel, on top of a bed of couscous and roasted vegetables, together with a large portion of green salad and rocket. Understated, yet spectacular - the vegetables were cooked to perfection and the salad was fresh and fine, with the goat's cheese parcel tasty and well-cooked. Mistakenly thinking that the salad was a side-dish, we'd ordered Spanish tortilla as well, which comes in two generous portions. We also ordered the ciabatta of chorizo, pequila pepper and rocket, which gave us the same unexpected pleasure - not just a simple sandwich, it was delicious, more than enough to satisfy, and accompanied with a hugely generous salad.
Keen as we were for new experiences, we also opted for pomegranate juice which appears on the comprehensive wine list, and again we were pleasantly surprised by the taste, which was wonderfully refreshing.
Much more than just a Cambridge nightspot, this quiet location is definitely somewhere we'll be returning to for lunch and dinner - and next time we'll make sure we experience the extensive cocktail menu too.
