| The Cow, is unappetisingly named but the pizzas they serve are the opposite. The Cow's pizzas and have achieved a legendary status in Cambridge, particularly pleasing punters with they have built up such a name for themselves we had to try their famous pizza their two-for-one Tuesdays. Part of the BRB chain, the The Cow is equally a bar as a restaurant and is an inoffensive place for the mostly youthful clientele to hang out, with a stainless steel bar, open kitchen, open brickwork, ex-church chairs, formica tables and ever-changing art work with an urban edge from local artists.
Up until 2002 the venue was home to the more traditional Red Cow, but now the BRB chain has taken over bringing a stone-bake pizza oven as well as a total refurb. The best seat in the house is the table by the big bay window, great for people watching with a window seat couch good for lounging.
Salads, wraps and tapas plates are on offer as well as pizza but as they have built up such a name for themselves we had to try their famous pizza. We went for the Goat and Nut which boasts an unusual combination of goat's cheese and walnut. These strong flavours won't suit all palattes but we found it a tasty treat, nicely set off by black olives and red onion. The good reputation comes from The Cow's visible stone-bake oven, which achieves a crispy base.
They have club nights and private parties downstairs, but as The Cow are yet to invest in their own sound-system the sound quality can be dubious. |
