| The Snug is too cool to truly be snug but the bar on Lensfield Road tries hard with burgundy walls, dark wood ceilings and floors and low brown leather seats. This is not to say that visitors aren't made to feel welcome, staff are always on hand to give a cheery hello, and surroundings are certainly comfortable. A mixed crowd of students and professional regulars will glady testify this. But the bar is sophisticated as well as comfortable, with some of the best cocktails in town, more forward thinking than your average drink/eatery a long chrome bar, thoughtful lighting and open brick work.
Another reason for the bar's popularity is the wide menu for food, particularly breakfasts, The Snug is open from 10am everyday and offers a "rough start" - full English, "hair of the dog" bloody mary and a cup of coffee or "fresh start" - fruit salad, yoghurt, smoothie and croissant amongst bagels, pancakes and eggs. The rest of the menu features salads, pastas, steaks and sandwiches. We sampled a tomato, cheddar and basil panini which arrived pipping hot, with gooey cheese served with a generous portion of crispy chips and a tasty salad with tangy mustard dressing.
Part of a small chain with other venues in Hertford and St Albans, The Snug in Cambridge was the first one started by an errant team of TGI Friday's bartenders breaking out on their own. They took over from traditional pub The Spread Eagle in 2005, and ran against convention by establishing table service and a totally smoke-free bar. Free wireless internet throughout, nice beers like Staropramen, Spitfire and Leffe on tap and a La Cimabali coffee machine also place The Snug as more forward thinking than your average drink/eatery. |
