Royal Standard (Cambridge)

A shining new eatery has emerged towards the bottom end of Mill Road. Previously the ramshackle and run-down Royal Standard pub the site went through a major transformation in 2008 and it certainly looks like the place to visit. Whilst retaining the original name the new Royal Standard is not a pub and makes no effort to say so. Unashamedly a restaurant it covers an interesting combination of Indian and Thai cuisine.

LS: Please note that the Royal Standard no longer serves Thai food as of June 2010. It may advertise itself as fusion but the owners hold over 30 years of experience running Indian restaurants

in and around Cambridge. We were offered poppadoms on arrival, the music was Indian and the staff were all unmistakably Indian. So naturally we ordered Thai food.

From a vast menu of both national foods we opted for a Thai platter to share including miniature fish cakes, spring rolls and prawn toast. "How to make healthy food unhealthy" was the humorous quip from a fellow diner. It was tasty if not maybe a bit greasy especially the vegetable tempura, a strange Japanese addition with small strips of vegetable, deep fried in masses of batter.

First impressions of the Royal Standard are very complimentary. Once inside the neatly set out venue, the central entrance and bar spits the restaurant equally into two halves of brightly lit tables. The décor is warm and lively with terracotta and peach giving a knowing burst of heat. Drinks are very competitively priced with beer no more expensive than in most pubs. We selected a safe and fruity red from a small but inexpensive wine list and a large jug of water.

There were positive comments by fellow diners' choices of panang chicken curry and lamb red curry. The pad thai, stir fried noodles with chicken, went down very well with good, all-round observations. The fish curry was less enthusiastically received as the flavours suggested by the menu - coconut milk, lime leaves, basil pepper and green beans - were overpowered by the oil.

We never tried the Indian menu on this visit but given the overall Indian feel of the place we have a suspicion that it would have been good. The Royal Standard looks superb and is found in a well placed location on Mill Road. Where better for a fusion restaurant than Cambridge's most multicultural area.

Takeaways from here are now the best in the area. The food and service have been great on the 3 occasions visited. Peshwari are the best out there are curries are fresh and fragrant. Would highly recommend.

We have been there thrice in the past month or so. The food has been consistently good. We're surprised that there haven't been more customers for the standard of food and price. The Thai food is no longer available. Have been recommending the Royal Standard to friends.

We booked in for a Valentine's lunch so the restaurant was very quiet, which helped for having a good chat. I can only hope it's often more busy at other times as it definitely deserves to be! The waiter was friendly, polite and non-pushy throughout and the service was exceptionally quick. The starters and the main courses we had were all beautifully cooked and delicious, we both agreed that the peshwari naan was probably the best we'd ever had. The portions were large and were a good balance of meat and sauce, no skimping on the chicken, so large in fact that despite the fact the dessert menu all looked brilliant we had to decline. That, however, gives us something to look forward to the next time, along with trying their Thai food which is only available in the evening (or was on the Sunday we went). We'll return for sure and would recommend the Royal Standard with gusto, in fact word of mouth has already started...

The Royal Standard is a real bonus to the food community. Thanks!

Been here a few times now. When its just just two of you its fine, but if there are few of you they just dont seem able to cope. Last night there were 8 of us, we arrived at 8.15, had poppadums and main course - no starters and it was 9.30 before we got our meals. Its not as though the place was full either. We had a similar experience a couple of months ago when there was a large party of us and food took forever for food to come. Theyre quick to check if people need more drinks - which are expensive. Unfortunately all it ends up doing is spoiling the meal as its dragged out too much. That said, the food weve had there is pretty good and the lassi was excellent.
